Falcons DC comments on facing Bears QB Caleb Williams

The Atlanta Falcons got some bad news on Saturday when they learned that Caleb Williams will indeed be returning to the lineup for the Chicago Bears this week after sitting out the last three games with a hamstring injury.

With their star quarterback sidelined, the Bears did manage to beat the injury-ravaged Philadelphia Eagles and the ongoing joke that is the New York Jets, but they got blown out last week by the Green Bay Packers as they scored just seven points.

Williams may not yet be a household name, but those around the league know he’s an incredible competitor and one of the most-challenging quarterbacks in the NFL to prepare for.

Falcons defensive coordinator Jeff Ulbrich hasn’t had to face Williams yet – so this will be his first time this afternoon. Here’s what Ulbrich had to say about that, per Josh Kendall at The Athletic.

“This is my first time going against him, and you see the highlights and you see this special player. But now that I’ve got an opportunity to really study him, he’s not just the face-of-the-franchise type guy — he’s one of those faces of the league… The talent is exceptional.”

So far this season Williams has appeared in two games – one against the Carolina Panthers and their porous defense, where he dropped 269 passing yards and four total touchdowns. The other was against the Minnesota Vikings and their elite defense led by Brian Flores, where he managed just 138 yards, no touchdowns and an interception.

The real Caleb Williams is of course somewhere in the middle of those two performances. Last season he enjoyed a breakout year under new head coach Ben Johnson, racking up 3,942 passing yards, 27 touchdowns, seven interceptions, plus 388 yards and three touchdowns as a rusher.
